Lionesses win inspires Chairgirls ahead of the new season

With the Lionesses securing a win last night at Wembley, the captain of Wycombe Wanderers FC Women, Katie Hudson, reflects on her experiences in Women’s football.

“If they can’t see it, they can’t be it, but now they can see it, Football has come home, the lionesses have inspired generation.

For years, female football at grassroots level has been used to allow clubs to have their charter standard. We now need to ensure there is a tangible grassroots legacy for female football. The Lionesses have started a journey, gained respect, showed courage and determination along the way.

From a very early age I grew up with two older brothers, so of course I was put in goal while they fired shots at me. This was just the beginning and I grew to love the game. Unfortunately at this time, girls football was non existent, so I tagged along to a couple of training sessions with my brothers team. From then on I never looked back and always had a ball at my feet, competing against the boys until I was given the opportunity to play for Wycombe Wanderers youth team and trained with the 1st team at the age of 8. Watching female football grow over the years has been amazing and its great to see it stepping in the right direction.

Witnessing the lionesses win the Euros, makes us as Wycombe Wanderers Women want to train harder and push ourselves to gain promotion. Promoting the womens game has always been at the forefront of our minds and now more than ever we hope the local community will come along and support Wycombe Wanderers Women at our brand new home ground, 1878 Stadium in Burnham.

It’s never to early or too late, If you have been inspired by the lionesses and would like to join Wycombe Wanderers Women please get in touch with Carl Simon on [email protected]

Emily Isaac, Wycombe Wanderers Trust director & ambassador to the Women’s team said:

“Firstly, congratulations to the Lionesses on a fantastic win last night. The win is a major boost to Wycombe Wanderers Women as they look to be inspired by the Lionesses success as the team prepare for the new season and hope to gain promotion.

With support for the Chairgirls growing, please do join us at any of our games throughout the 2022/23 season and we would love to see as many supporters as possible cheering on the team! “
